Drilling Scrap and Core Sampling Policy

at the Core Library of Direction de l’expertise des réservoirs géologiques

Unwashed scraps (bags of debris)

Provided that a sufficient quantity of sample is available, a 100-gram sample of scraps distributed over a depth of 15 meters is permitted from fabric debris bags (i.e., from 3 bags if sampled at 5 meters).

Core sample

To ensure sample continuity, only a side slice (50% (1/2) of a whole core, or 25% (1/4) of a half core) may be taken with a rock saw in quantities and at intervals less than 10% of the sample (i.e., a maximum of 10% per box of cores), taking into account the availability and condition of the sample. Note that the rock saw must be operated by a Ministère de l'Économie, de l’Innovation et de l’Énergie (MEIE) employee.

When more than one series of the same core is available, sampling is permitted on only one series.

Other considerations

All sampling must be carried out under the supervision of the core bank manager, who is employed by the Geological Reservoir Expertise Branch of the MEIE.

In cases where the entire sample would be affected by sampling, it is only authorized if the scope of the study justifies it.

A copy of the report (and data table) resulting from the study and/or analysis of the samples must be sent by email to the Geological Reservoir Expertise Branch (demandes.hydrocarbures@economie.gouv.qc.ca) no later than one (1) year following the sampling date.
